The Technology

Surround Sound Components
There are two major groups of surround sound components, loudspeakers and receivers. In order to reap the benefits of a DTS or Dolby Digital/Pro Logic encoded movie, it is necessary for both sets of components to be compatible with the desired format.

Loudspeakers - unlike the typical "stereo system" which places two speakers in front of the listener, a surround sound system includes five to seven speakers (5.1 or 7.1 channels), three in front and two to four speakers located to the side and/or rear of the listener. To add low-bass frequencies, one to four subwoofers are included.

Audio/video (A/V) Receiver - the A/V receiver receives signals from television shows, DVDs and other source components and separates them for use by the front, side and rear speakers in your surround sound system.

Component Placement. Placement of your surround sound components is serious business. Certain rules of thumb generally exist, but different rooms have different acoustical properties so perfect placement can vary. Knowing proper subwoofer placement for dispersion, knowing how to control "slap echoes" and where the "null" of the room is are key to a great sounding system.
